Themelovers is born on a simple idea that theming must be simple. Even people who has zilch knowledge of CSS must be able to theme their websites, blogs or forums.

Right now, we use drupal, joomla or wordpress for our websites or blogs. when it comes to selecting the themes, we are handicapped. The themes we select doesn't conform to our color templates, we have in our minds or in our mock-ups. so we end up either being unsatisfied or spending a lot of time in understanding the colors and the CSS which is powering our site.

At themelovers, we are keen on simplifying the theming process.

It is a humble beginning..just 1 CMS and 2 themes..... we will add many more...

Does Google + override facebook ?

I have started using google + from few days for now ( although not geeky )
There are lot of debates happening between facebook and google lovers, typical
human psycology. There are only few who gave their honest feedback for new googles venture.

Although I am not big fan of social networking sites, I am an active member of facebook ( orkut...long back ).

I felt google + is an improved version of facebooks features..
there are no add-ons. Google+ is fast and integrated nicely and wisely into google products. Even though circle concept looks cool..featurewise its not different than Facebook. Like concept was a big hit for facebook and now we have 'plus' concept in G+. Privacy was one of the main concept google promised about for G+ and implemented. I remember this much privacy is already there in FB.

I couldnot find anything new in google+ and disappointed with it.
People are joining to G+ just to explore what they get new in + app ( as I did ).

We expect more from google, a brand itself. What do you say ?? post your comments........

Why Google chrome OS may be a non-starter?

Google has raised hopes with chrome OS touted as first operating system designed with keeping web in mind. It was a nice idea and in this blog, we couldn't have concurred more 1, 2.
With the recent rise of iPads and their bretheren, we see clouds on the first cloud OS itself. What the users will do in chrome OS, which they are not able to do in tablets?
One assault to the chrome OS came from Google itself: Android optimized for tablets. it seemed like Google itself asking why we need chrome OS.

Why Yahoo Livestand will be successful?

On 11th Feb, Yahoo launched a new product: Digital newsstand (Yahoo livestand).

Publishing industry is going downward spiral from sometime. For analytical stories, power of bloggers and enthusiasts are now well established. Rise of the twitter took the honors of breaking the news also. But this model has its own problem i.e. separating the grain from the chaff.
So a mass medium which provides a platform for categorization, curation and serving the content in a pleasing way is still needed. The Daily Launched on iPad by Rupert murdoch and Apple is one example that publishing industry faces a gap on online media.

Yahoo Livestand fills exactly this gap.

At one hand, it will provide a powerful tool for content creators to come up with a new experience on the web. on the other hand, it will provide advertisers to embrace the online medium.
For users, this model scales to different platforms i.e. iPad, Android (announced) and desktop(Planned) to provide them with a seamless experience across devices and platoforms to create a compelling experience.
Initially, Yahoo has planned to launch it with its own content, then more publishers will gradually come onboard.

Facebook publish - bug

I am using facebook publish feature in my current project.
Its an ajax request and requires Facebook API key and a secret key
Using facebook stream publish feature you can publish content to facebook wall
from your application. It works great !!
From past two days its not returning to call back function after successfull
publish..displaying blank page now (:
Anybody has some idea about this ??

Fooled by Randomness

I am currently reading a book "Fooled by Randomness" by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. I have first read about him in "What the Dog Saw" by Malcom Gladwell - in the chapter Blowup.

As a financial novice, I see everybody has a theory/ practice which is equally convincing in its narration with others. I am still in the middle of the book but I find his ideas radical, new and mostly "against the grain". (un)fortunately I also find Warren Buffet's "Value investing" idea equally great who according to Nassim Taleb may be a monkey out of a billion on the typewriter which happened to compose Illiad.

I also see some similarity between Nassim and warren Buffet:

1. Both see the limitations of reading wall street journal and hot tips dished on television.

2. Both don't time the market to invest in it.

3. Both see the irrationality of price of the stocks.

Drupal Bangalore User Group - Meet

On June 19th, we have hosted Drupal - Bangalore user group(D-BUG) meet in SPAN premises.

Since in Bangalore, it was just a beginning of Drupal meets, so we decided to keep it short and sweet. which eventually turned out to be with the warmth and energy of the fellow drupalers. we had couple of talks - on Drupal for newbies and other for Drupal + Apache Solr by Anil.

But more nice was to see the energy and enthusiasm to share their drupal stories and their experiences with drupal. Sumeet explained in detail about his experience in building a drupal application on top of a gaming site.

Anil was instrumental in set the ball rolling and answering the general Drupal related queries.

In morning, Umesh (SPAN general manager) welcomed the drupalers and Latish and SPAN PHP team oversaw the arrangements and agenda.

It was fun day sharing the thoughts with fellow drupalers and put them in our workplaces.

That's the theme of the open source community which this meet lived upto.

ZOHO is a company which I am very much follow its offerings. It has got a innovative streak, hard to match. In the enterprise cloud computing, it is one of the companies who has the mettle to make it big. In this blog, I have covered some aspects of it here and here

Today, they have launched an innovation in enterprise search - 'actionable search'. We have got used to watching hyperlinks and in some cases content. but our seach never grew beyond rating, customize the search results etc. This is a giant step firmly setting the focus back on search.

Right now, every seach engine was focusing on how to satisfy the user with its search result. and remains silent after that. ZOHO asks after we have delivered the correct search result then what you do next?

It will be a nice to see it merged with universal search.

Next apple product?

Next apple new product line may be years away, given the history of its product launches. Still, It does not stop me from starting a guessting game. what could be the next big launch? so trying to put some sense to this entirely unpredictable question, I put some parameters.

1. It should be fun

2. It should be generic - most of the users should be able to use it.

3. it should be touch, gesture - multi-touch interfaces are really they are successful at.

4. It should support apps - the success of apps in their iPhone and iPad provides them ecosystem and of course dollars

What could be this new device. I will bet on gaming console from apple. Gaming console space looks crowded with Microsoft, wii and sony. but phone, netbooks and music players were also crowded when Apple launched its product.

so My bet on gaming console.

GIDS.web conference talks

Yesterday on 21st Apr, 2010, I attended GIDS.web conference. I attended some nice sessions by Marty Hall, Scott Devis and many more.
In session "A Comparison of Approaches to Building Rich Internet Applications with Ajax", Marty explored the different approaches and situations to use java script and frameworks. he concluded that when to start a project from scratch, using GWT could be a better approach. but in an ongoing project, sometimes core java script works good. or jQuery could be the answer.

In second talk I attended, it was on "Changing face of web", Ramesh explored the ways in which web is changing.

More real-time

Real time sentiment visualization - instead of saying yes or no to an article now we will say what feeling I have.
Real time collaboration - we are able to collaborate real-time with other users of the network with google docs and wave.
Real time video - Ramesh argued that web is getting more real-time with near-live broadcast of IIPL. it is a meeting point of TV with social web.

After this I attended session by Scott Devis, on "web2.0 checklist- Deconstructing modern websites". He gave a hearty talk on what constitutes a web2.0 site beyond the bells and whistles. He started with Tim O'Reilley talk on web2.0 and argued that web 2.0 sites have following characterestics

Dynamic, not static
Interactive, not passive
Collaborative not standalone
componentized not monolithic

Another session I attended by Marty Hall on "Choosing an AJAX toolkit". He focused on the popular java script frameworks.
Based on the following criteria, he mentioned which one is better.

AJAX Support: Everyone is mostly same
Rich GUI: ExtJS, Dojo, YUI on top, jQuery - a liitle behind and prototype and scriptaculous - a lot behind
DOM Querying and manipulation: jQuery then extJS and Dojo
Overall ease of use: jQuery on top and google closure at bottom
General JS programming features: Google closure and prototype with jQuery a little behind Support for extra large projects: Google closure on top with YUI, ExtJS, Dojo on behind
Market penetration: jQuery

Puzzle in my life

I am working in Bangalore since 6 years. I stay in a rented accommodation. Till now, I have shifted 4 homes and staying in fifth one.

In Bangalore, we have that active BBMP(?) that takes care of roads in the city. They keep building and rebuilding the roads throughout the year. J

What puzzles me that whenever they start building or renovating a road in front of my house, I shift my house to some other uncharted locality in Bangalore. Till now this statement is true for all the four houses from where I have shifted.

Yesterday evening while returning from my office, I saw that they are planning to renovate the road in front of my house. I like this locality and my home.

I am writing this blog in Google docs. I have configured Docs to publish it to my blog. After Google Docs publishes this post to my blog, Feedburner (another application of Google) fetches this post from blogger and using its URL shortening service goo.gl shortens the URL and publishes to twitter. for which my feedburner is configured. Google buzz fetches it from my twitter account and displays it in my Buzz account and all the friends who follows my Buzz and also the last thing, LinkedIn also fetches it from my twitter account.

In my recent project we integrated twitter library
to connect to the most used social networking site, Twitter.
Day after day twitter is becoming famous and is
also coming up with innovative ideas to interact with
their site from your sites. There are many libraries in
almost all the languages say Mytwitter(php),
AppTweet(perl), Twitter4j(Java) with different types
of licenses. For PHP,Twitterlibphp is mostly
used and it is very easy to implement too.
Just we need to call the library class after downloading
and including it in your site. We can send/reply to tweets,
can get the number of followers/messages/friends.. etc
Twitter library gives you a lot of functions to get almost all
the information from twitter.

By now, i have become a fan of Malcolm Gladwell. Yesterday, when I saw "What the dog saw", I just bought it...no ifs or buts...I read his earlier books as well. Unlike his earlier books, "What the dog saw" does not revolve around a theme. but it is true to Malcolm Gladwell. It analyses the social events, people in a much different way.
am still in between it. but I can recommend it with high five.

multiple process - chrome

I wondered why google chrome creates multiple process
when I actually observed in my windows task bar.
After some researches on this topic got a bit of information
that chrome architecture supports multiple process
inorder to handle the large,dynamic data. unless other
browsers ( except IE8, which also supports multiple processes)
each website is a new process in chrome however
the links we click from the website will follow the same
process. One advantage of this architecture
is, there is no need to restart your browser if one process
fails, you can just kill that process. But its also true that
memory usage will be little more than single process architecture.

PHP Team Development - Review

I am reading book "PHP Team Development". And really far from impressed.It takes small subset, is a bit preachy and nothing PHP about it.
It only discusses agile methodology of project management, framework based development. so a vast number of developers and projects got left out. It is a bit preachy. It does talk about how to forge team bonding. yes, that's necessary. but what is PHP in it. It is a bit tooo general. It is named PHP team development. and most of the part, it talks about agile methodology only scratching the surface. nothing detailed. Atleast they would have provided templates for scrums, daily meeting report or weekly status report. But it just scrub the upper layer without going into detail.

Totally avoidable book.

I am currently reading a book "PHP Team Development". Just started to read it.

In the starting pages, it emphasizes about agile methodology of software development. In the page 12 of the book, It lists out the premises of the agile development.

Level 1 - Initial (Chaotic)

just an eye-opener for me. It made me think that how the companies who follow SEI-CMM level 4 and 5 guidelines follow the agile processes. Both are different and poles apart.

Agile emphasises on Individuals and interactions while SEI-CMM emphasises on processes and makes the development more process-centric.

It looks like Agile is just a fad for some development companies.

My predictions for the year 2010.

1. Google chrome OS will be a rage.

Though Chrome OS looks like a only-web platform and support to offline content is limited, still it will be a rage due to its speed and simplicity.

2. Google wave will prove as a real challenger to mail, chat.

In recent blogs, I wrote that it is more a platform than an application. but the way, it has open its API. It will foster innovative application around it to fuel its growth.

3. Microsoft will announce a no-frills operating system.

With more netbooks and web, windows 7 will not be the same as windows XP. World has changed so will be the OS.

4. facebook and twitter will focus more on enterprise solutions rather than social networking.

facebook and twitter ticked more due to its social networking features but to move to next orbit, it has to adopt enterprise. revenue does not equal to advertisements for everyone.

5. Apple iWork may move to web.

when other office software are moving to web, why not apple?

6. print media will give e-book readers a tight hug.

print media especially newspapers will embrace e-book readers to save themselves. Google chrome OS powered netbooks and Google books will give amazon kindle and B&N nook a tough competition.

7. Gadget for the next year will be E-book readers.

I will not name any one e-book reader, but collectively they will change how the books are read. All the romance about sifting the pages and scent of paper will undergo a change.

8. Nokia will announce more smartphones for android and Linux than for symbian.

Smartphones are weak link for nokia. Andoid will explode only to second after iPhone store. Nokia may embrace android for its smartphones. Goodbye Ovi and Symbian.

It is certainly a technology marvel. but unlike other google products. It has got a learning curve. and also, you need to get used to this concept.

We have got so much used to gTalk, gmail, Outlook that we are still to appreciate its true value.

Google wave: why I got swept off?

I have got my google wave invitation , actually I was longing for it . but off late, it just did not click with me .

it is a technological marvel. wiki, docs, real-time chat, mail, forum rolled in one cool application. Each application we use everyday, then why it did not click to me.

Reasons I brainstormed are:

1. It would have been more neat: yes, it does have a cool interface but on a doc, say 5 peoples have entered their data, it is really amoebic in shape. anybody can comment or edit anything. it looks cool as technological piece, but going through the doc takes a lot of diversions.

2. It provides a lot of information. when we want to review or to know who has edited what, it is nice to see the timeline. the current interface looks to me as if a man did not see light since 6 months has been subjected to arc lights. I just can't figure out what to do of which information. we are used to sequential reading. when this a bit unstructured information comes, then we just feel out of place.

I am used to the gmail or our corporate mail or gTalk which looks like a snail mail for wave standards.

Looks like I will need some time to get accustomed to wave's fast pace.

Now I am so impressed with outliers-10k hours rule that on every genius, I try to apply this rule.
you need to read to believe the book- its impressive research, poweful narration.

Cloud Computing - what ? why?

Some days before, I saw this word 'cloud computing' while reading
an article in net. Now, got some time to look into this topic as phase
3 release of my project has been successfully done on schedule. :)

This technology is not new to many of us but the word sounds
interesting. Infact, we all are using this one or the other way!!!

Cloud is what which hides back screen from our eyes. It is used
to describe a layer of seperation here. So, computing behind screens
is cloud computing !!! .. :)

Now we will get on to technical definition of cloud computing .....

“A style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-related
capabilities are provided ‘as a service’ to external customers
using Internet technologies.”

1. Service based -> Defined interfaces between consumers and
providers
2. Scalable & elastic -> Scales to add or remove resources, as needed
3. Shared -> Shares a pool of resources for economy of scale
4. Metered by use -> Tracks usage and enables multiple payment
models
5. Internet tech -> Is delivered through Internet formats and
protocols

When you start digging more into this topic we definitely come across
Iaas, Paas and Saas ! what are they ?

Iaas : IT Level “Infrastructure-as-a-Service” where only
infrastructure was provided as service includes System administration,
obtain general processing, storage, database management,
and other resources and applications through the network and pay only
for what gets used.
ex: Amazon Web Services, Google Base …

Paas: Developer Level “Platform-as-a-Service” where Developers
can design, build and test applications that run on the Cloud provider’s
infrastructure and then deliver those applications to end-users from
the providers servers.
ex: Microsoft Windows Azure, Yahoo developer network, Google
App Engine, …

Saas: User Level “Software-as-a-Service” where Companies host
applications in the cloud that many users access through internet
connections. The services being sold or offered is a complete end-user
application.

Outliers: review

I am currently reading the book "Outliers " by Malcom Gladwell. I have just read the first 5 chapters yet but still can't wait to write about it.

It deciphers success and its origin. It extends the notion that success comes with only hard work, passion and determination. This book explores beyond that.

In the first chapter(Matthew Effect), author argues citing the birth dates of canadian ice hockey players that even seemingly unbiased system of choosing a player can be biased. Since the players are grouped age wise so in that group, early born have an unfair advantage over late borns due to physical strength and more practise under their belt and stands a better chance of moving to next stage. It happens at every stage of selection eliminating the late borns.

so in this case, author notes that not only hard work and talent matters but also when you are born.

In second chapter(10,000 hour rule) Author illustratrates "To become a world class genius, 10,000 hrs of practice is required" by giving examples of beatles, Bill Gates etc. You start early, the better it is.

In chapter 3 and 4, author conceptualize "Threshold IQ". After a certain IQ level, all people success and failure probability is same. here also, good parentage and good environment helps you. A person with IQ level 135 (say) with middle to high family background has a good chance of being successful than an IQ level of 170 (say) with low family background.

Yahoo Geocode API,REST calls and PHP

While using Yahoo!’s Geocoding API web services if we are not specifying any output format default xml output will be provided. When we query this web service using REST calls with file_get_contents(), which is a php function to get the contents of a file, file_get_contents of your query will print you a string as an output. But php treat this in a strange manner as we could not use string functions on this output such as substr() however it will print the XML tag for $Output[0]....etc and so on. So it is better to specify output format as php will give you a
serialized php, which you can unserialize it and use as an array output.

Through very few persons, who have rode and previewed Google wave, I got the impression that

GMail + GTalk + Google Docs + Blogger + Real-time Colloboration = Google Wave

In the techCrunch review , My expectations were like

1. It is synthesis of Gmail, GTalk, Google docs and Blogger.

2. After writing a text, I will decide whether I want to publish it to my blog, save it to google docs, mail it to my friend or transfer this file through GTalk or collaborate and edit it with my friend.

But when I used Google wave, It was not what I expected. It was more of a platform than an application. Now wave users will take a call how they want to use it.

It is its real-time colloboration and gadgets that will make a difference. It is more like firefox. It is users who create their own flavor of browser that is really appealing to all of us.

Steps to install symfony in XAMPP

1. Extract the symfony-stable folder in htdocs and rename it to symfony

2. Right-click "My Computer"->properties->Advanced->Environment Variables

3. Select variable "Path" and click Edit and append ";C:\Program Files\xampp\php;C:\Program Files\xampp\mysql\bin;C:\Program Files\xampp\symfony\data\bin”

4. Start the Command Prompt. cd to the location where you want your project directory. e.g. cd xampp/hrtdocs

5. Make a directory for your project using “mkdir myproj” command.

6. Open this directory “cd myproj”. Type “symfony init-project myproj”. This will copy all the default symfony project files to your directory.

7. Type “symfony init-app myapp”. This will create an application inside your symfony project. You can close the Command Prompt now.

8. Copy the contents of symfony\data\web\sf to myproj\web\sf folder

9. Now open your browser, type URL "http://localhost/myproj/web/index.php". If everything went right, it will open this page.

I am alone in an empty room, absolutely empty room. nothing there except me, window open. I am wandering in the room, mind drifting from one thought to another, oblivious to everything outside. cool winds wafting into the room makes the room pleasant.

Slowly walking in the room, my eyes went outside the room - in the open space. My jaws dropped, eyes widened - TIGER - How come here? I was frozen on my legs. It is a city - no forest nearby. How can a tiger come here?

Watching the tiger with pounding heart - Oh, my God - He is coming towards my room, walking a bit lazily. I run towards the window, try to bolt it up. NO, that tiger stares at me, jumps at the window. putting his claws around the window rods. I try to fight back, pushing the window panes harder, tiger proves stronger. window panes strikes with walls - window now widely open. He tries to unlock it - but rods are stronger - that window is stronger, but he won't give up. he will fight it, he will get into the room.

I feel puzzled - doors are weak, why didn't he strike there? I try to run away, something is stopping me. several thoughts running in my mind - tiger looks harmless to me - Should I open the door?, let him in. Nooooooo....Don't do it, after all, it is a tiger. there is some underground room to hide, I can run upstairs too. but no, I won't, I don't feel like running away.

I feel, He wants to express something to me, but keeps trying to unlock the window. Me too, feel like asking him a lot, but can't ask - He is a tiger, how will he understand?

when is the next recession? - Part 2

Predicting is a tough job especially about the financial predictions. Nobody wants to listen the bad news, forget about experiencing it. Looks like next recession is inevitable. As I predicted in my article , recession is merely 2 years away. As current situations show, it looks to be just right.

Except for consumer confidence, I do not see any much difference in ground realities. But all economic parameters are sounding as if everything is all right. it is NOT.

How the prices of all the essential commodities are increasing? How the realty prices are heading north? Why the sensex is so high? why china has become so bullish when consumer confidence and spending had hit rock bottom just six month back. It looks like chinese economy is an untold story of this recession. Why essential commodities, stocks, realty, bullion - everything in the world - rising up?

It is certainly a wakeup call.

Novel Cigarette Delivery System: Initial Draft :-)

I am currently thinking of a novel way of smoking these days which I will elaborate in this post.

Current situation:

People go to corner shop, buy a cigarette, light the cigarette using matchbox or lighter, smoke and throw the stub.

Advantage:

1. inertia: smokers has got used to it.

2. In India, there are million of shops, whose bread and butter attached to this system.

3. Smokers find a certain joy in this whole process.

4. You can buy a single stick at a time.

5. you can do some smoking tricks e.g. making rings out of smoke etc.

Disadvantage:

1. System is inefficient. there is a lot more people attached in this entire chain. so it violates the trend of "farm-to-fork" business model.

2. You need to have lighter/matchbox with you.

3. you throw stubs after smoking which makes the roads/home dirty.

4. It is bulky. you can't keep more than a pack of cigarettes in your pocket.

5. It encourages passive smoking.

Proposed Solution:

Cigarette companies can deliver the substances found in cigarette smoke as compressed smoke in inhalers so smokers can inhale as inhaled by Asthma patients. They will provide small cylinders with compressed smoke as refills or vendors may have refilling kiosks to fill the cylinders

Advantages of the proposed system:

1. It is efficient and clean system.

2. you don't have to keep matchbox/ lighter to smoke

3. Roads/homes will be clean

4. you can get bigger refills and keep it in your pocket/ will be lighter on the pocket

5. It will reduce transportation and delivery losses and costs.

6. will be boon for passive smokers.

7. you don't have to go out to smoke. Just be in your seat/ home/bed and inhale it.

8. it won't affect the existing business model completely. It will just realign the business forces.

9. Pollution will be less.

So, Stop smoking, Start Inhaling.

What does wikipedia do?

Wikipedia is an online repository of crowdsourced data which is edited by editors.

it is repository, users create on wikipedia servers.

what hakia is doing?

it is labeling the sites credible for its contents on a topic. Instead of storing all data on its server, it classify them and educate the users which site is worth referring. here also flagging the sites as credible is done by hakia editors as in wikipedia.

Can we think then hakia as distributed version of wikipedia?

Another product which comes close to hakia is Google scholar. Google scholar also helps us searching scholarly papers and it is distributed as well but Google do not have editorial control and its content source is not wide.

Different flavors of search engine

A search engine, when it launches its operation, we compare it with google and treat it as another google clone, but soon it finds a niche.

Like WolframAlpha , bing, hakia, hunch, cuil, Yebol. As it is clear now, most of them has found or slowly finding their niche.

WolframAlpha is certainly not a search engine. it is a computation engine as they say. it provides us with structured data like google squared but wolframAlpha is much more vast and robust. it is the future of search results, how we want our search answers to be. It should also display unstructured results where it can't compute instead of a blank page.

Bing is a decision engine(they say) and is a bit different from google as it provides a snapshot of results after you search which provides ease of use and also its interface is a bit cheeky.

hakia is structuring the web on the subject level and indexing the credible site with the help of editors -some sort of distributed wikipedia powered with search.

hunch theme and motto - promising Yes, implementation wise still it has a long way to go. I am still to find out how to make it work for me.

cuil and yebol still jumping the ships, yet to find a niche, i would say.

Computers and telecommunication industry are so similar but yet so different. Both work on entirely different principles. In computers, hardware companies clout are not so much visible as in telecom Here in computers, they make the hardware ship it to you and they are out of the picture but in telecom their clout is much more evident. Telcos decide which apps should run on their devices and which should not and unfortunately there is not transparency as we see in apple-google voice case.

It seems to be changing a bit with apple-google voice case as now users are taking charge. Users can only correct this situation. Hardware makers and carriers should no way decide which software should work on its device as long as users are happy with it and conforms to legal and ethical standards.

My wish list for the Google chrome OS are:

All the useful and offline applications: like Picasa, office productivity tool, offline mail, and offline calendar: It is right that it is an OS which is getting designed in internet era but many times, we want our applications on our desktop only. Sometime the internet connection is clunky and sometime, we are on the move.
Google gears support: It should have Google gears installed and working. What I want that, more applications should support Google gears
My one of the biggest grudge with current OSes is the wallpaper. It never changed radically since Windows 95. It needs to change now. Please make it like Google chrome default page. All the most used applications on the wallpaper and a desktop search box right in the Wallpaper. should be like Google chrome or maybe like igoogle
Google desktop is a nice application. Please bundle it with chrome OS.
For a true web centric OS there must be a service bundling support. Like I use twitter, Google docs, Facebook, igoogle. I must get this environment with single click of an icon. This service needs to be customizable…no going to browser and making our environment click by click.

Why we go to rediff – for shopping, fare search, grabbing some news, checking mail. Ringtone download, website hosting etc. Does homepage redesign serve these purposes to help users find it? With this design, these services are one-more-click-away from the users. How rediff is serving the users

It defies logic that homepage should serve the 95 % of users or revenues. Google follows it. Yahoo follows it
They are wasting a lot of homepage real state just for sake of nothing
This design is good for mobile phone users. Not for big screens and big screens are a sizable surfer for rediff
Rediff is known for content and content preview is missing on the homepage

NBOS should facilitate single sign-on (SSO) to get into this set of services.

Budget 2009-10 quick review: thumbs up

It looks like it is a good budget, however sensex is down.

coz it removed some of the complexity in direct taxes and concentrated on core sectors and sectors which has been hit most by the recession. Also it is third stimulus package so government can't dole out infinite stimulus to everybody.

However it would have been better if government would have increased the 80C limits instead of increasing the tax slabs. It would have been more effective

It may not be right time to share the bad news. when the economy has just started recovering. but I am trying to forecast this as many economists do and they fail to do it. I may also fail but I will be more happy if I fail.

A lot of money has been thrown by the governments around the world to bolster public spending. they did not let the market forces to correct the system. therein they sowed the seeds of the next recession.

Hence next recession will be caused by oversupply of money and staggering inflation. and we can get into it as soon as we come over the current recession. It could be around 2 years from now on. this puts the date June 2011. ya pretty likely...

I had a morning walk today!!

Today, after a long time, I had a morning walk nearby on the bank of madiwala lake. view of the sunrise was quite pleasing. It is a developing park. BMC (not sure?) had put some benches and fenced this area and put some kids play thing like see-saw and some other iron-made things. but I didn't see any kids. Perhaps due to morning, they were not there.

Madiwala lake is quite polluted. water is quite black, even I saw a dead fish there in the lake. One old man, after seeing my specs called me up and told me to remove the specs and walk naked feet (thanks God!! feet only) in order to improve the eyesight. Anyway I listened to his advice. maybe tomorrow, if I go for a morning walk, I will remember his advice.

How news sites will look in future?

first the background:
As I attended one gathering at silicon india where Ajit Balakrishnan(AB), Rediff CEO, he was telling that still we are in the internet primitive era. still our news sites look like newspapers (e.g. http://in.rediff.com). we have content and advertising on the page.

so sites like http://us.rediff.com be the future of news sites. I find it a bit more mobile phone friendly. It is true that now news sites are also accessed equally from mobile phones.it raises another question:
Will mobile phones guide us in future how we access the sites on the desktop? can't we have 2 different versions for a same site- mobile and desktop version. How it will earn revenue from its home page?. Many in the audience asked the last question. but AB also accepted he does not have a clue about it.

Another pointer is http://ibnlive.com. It is also mobile friendly, still content rich page unlike rediff US. It uses multimedia to the maximum extent. It is business friendly- as it sports ads as well. but will take lots more time to load on the mobiles.

what is the way to go? We need to wait for some time to see how this space unfolds

I have attended the Silicon India seminar on 6^th of June, 2009. I have listened to Sanjeev Bhikchandani(SB) of Naukri fame and Ajit Balkrishnan(AB) of Rediff on entrepreneurship

SB in his address recalled his journey about naukri and handed out some tips for inspiring entrepreneurs:

Like automotives in earlier days was called horseless carriages. To remove this tag, it took industry about 20 years.

In same way, state of internet is like horseless carriage now. Now slowly it is moving to next stage with mobile internet.

Forgot to mention subject while composing an official email and feel bad later!!!

Yes…. It's a concern for all…. An email without a subject brings a bad impression on us.

To avoid this, just follow the simple steps mentioned below and see the result.

Here are the steps: -

1. Open your Outlook.
2. Press Alt+F11. This opens the Visual Basic Editor and then Press Ctrl+R which in turn open Project-Project 1 (left side)

3. On the Left Pane, one can see "Microsoft Outlook Objects" or "Project1", expand this. Now one can see the "ThisOutLookSession".
4. Double click on "ThisOutLookSession". It will open up a Code Pane on the right hand side.
5. Copy and Paste the following code in the right pane (Code Pane) and save it
